Organic Apple Peanut Butter Dog Cookies

So by now most of you know Ace.  Ace is probably the most spoiled bear in Miami.  Not only do I bake all of Aces dog treats now, but we also prepare all his food at home.  Yes, you read that correctly.  Our four legged son will now turn up his nose to kibble but gladly gobbles down cooked ground chicken mixed with steamed veggies and rice.

After I admit this, people look at us like we are crazy; this is always my general response:
While it is a lot of work to prepare all of his meals, I enjoy the fact that I know exactly what we are putting into his little body.  No more guessing, and no more words that I can not pronounce.  Ace has a very sensitive stomach + skin allergies, and has been on vet prescribed ultra allergen free dog food for the past year.  Since we made the switch, and started preparing his dog food & treats at home, his symptoms have disappeared.  If you are interested in preparing your pups food at home, Pink Pistachio has a great recipe, see it here.

One of the first posts that I did on my blog was on homemade dog treats (view it here).  My thinking is that if I were a dog, I wouldn't want to eat the same thing over and over again, so I switch it up for him.  Organic applesauce is the shining star in this recipe, and the aroma that fills your house when baking these is amazing!  I also have been dying to add to his treats the pulp from my juicing escapades lately, and so I experimented with adding the pulp of carrots, kale, and apples (if you don't have a juicer, you can just add shredded carrots).  If Aces tail wagging reaction is any indication of how good the cookies were, I will definitely be making these again!  In my opinion, there is nothing better than earning those tail wags :)

Ingredients

2½ cups organic rice flour (you can also use whole wheat)
1/3 cup organic shredded carrots (or pulp)
1 cup organic unsweetened applesauce
2 tbsp organic natural peanut butter (the only ingredients should be peanuts)
2 eggs
 ½ tsp cinnamon

Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Using a stand mixer, combine all ingredients, and mix on low speed.
  3. Finish by kneading by hand, as if you were kneading dough for bread.
  4. Using a heavily floured surface, roll dough out to 1/4" thickness.
  5. Use cookie cutters, or cut dough into small squares.
  6. Bake on a cookie sheet for 20 minutes, or until golden brown and firm to the touch.
  7. Cool on a wire rack & store in the refrigerator.  These also freeze very well.

I don't know how, but he always knows when I'm baking for him :)

I love that you can see the little bits of carrots & kale

I make him wait so patiently for that first bite

As a side note, yesterday was the drawing for the Sephora Lip Gloss giveaway.  Congrats to Regina!!!!

Thank you so much for checking out my blog.  I really hope that you give this recipe a try, and that your pup loves them as much as Ace does!

    1. Hi! Thanks for the comment, but cinnamon in small doses is actually entirely safe for dogs to consume! It's great for pups with diabetes and promotes a healthy blood flow :)

  7. My Boxer is allergic to wheat so I will try the rice flour. But she is also allergic to chicken so I have never given her eggs (just in case). Can you suggest a sub for the eggs?
