Kitchen Design

The construction of our new home is progressing along nicely at this point.  There have been some hiccups along the way; we changed the rear of our house from sliding glass walls to arched french doors to make the home feel more traditional.  Unfortunately, this resulted in a 5 month delay due to "structural changes and re-permitting".  We got back on track in April and it's finally starting to take shape.  We are currently finalizing our cabinet designs and have also recently completed a rough selection of lighting - lighting has been the hardest choices to make thus far!

Below is a sample of renderings from our cabinet maker, Elite Cabinetry, as well as images that our interior designers curated for our design boards. These images include plumbing, hardware, and appliance selections that we have finalized along with images of particular design elements that we will be incorporating into our own kitchen.

I hope that you enjoy this sneak peek of our kitchen design, and that you all have a fantastic upcoming holiday weekend!  We're headed to Nevis to celebrate Isla's third birthday.  Her birthday, which always falls on Labor Day weekend, is a particularly hard weekend to wrangle down friends & family for toddler festivities, so we decided this year to take her on a close little Caribbean getaway.  We can't wait to show her wild monkeys!

More New Home Inspiration

The construction of our new home is progressing fairly quickly at this point.  We broke ground in December, rough plumbing has gone in, and our foundation should be poured in the next week or two.  After dreaming up this home for the past 2+ years, it is so wonderful to see it start to come to life. Once the foundation goes in, we should start cruising from here!

Back in December, we retained a new interior designer, Bria Hammel Interiors.  I have followed her on instagram for quite some time (view her feed here for some dreamy inspiration), and when we decided to part ways with our previous designer, I had her and a few other firms in mind.  We flew up to Minneapolis towards the end of December to meet with her in person and that sealed the deal.  She does projects all over the US, flying down every few months to dedicate 3-4 days solely on our home.  It has been such a pleasant process to far, and I'm blown away by the creativity of her + the Bria Hammel team.  I only wish we would have had her on board from the beginning!

Last week I shared a few photos on instagram that have served as major home inspiration for our interiors and I wanted to share them with you on here as well.  I had so many people reach out to me and ask if these are on my Pinterest boards as well, and the answer to that is no.  I have found that following designers on instagram is a much better source of inspiration vs scouring the depths of Pinterest for images.

As I stated in this post, my style is very classic.  I'm drawn to dark hardwood floors, white millwork, marble, polished nickel, built ins, and lots attention to details.  I also like clean lines, and not a lot of clutter.  We want to build a more traditional style home, but with an updated present day feel (if that makes sense).   I want the overall aesthetics of our new home to look effortless, peaceful, and approachable.

Below is a sampling of photos that I find inspirational, and hope to be able to bring certain elements of each photo into our new home.

Which photo is your favorite?

Have a great week - thanks for stopping by! xx

New Home Inspiration

Hi all!  Long time no see.  I've really missed this space, as well as connecting with all of you!  I want to make a conscious effort to post on here more often, especially since we're getting ready to break ground on our new home soon.  I want to document the new construction process so expect to see more posts in the future.

From the beginning, I've always envisioned a very classic home featuring dark hardwood floors, beautiful white millwork, and black steel framed windows.  My husbands style is more contemporary, so this has definitely been a challenge for our interior designer.

One conversation that took place between our builders and myself really stands out in my mind.  Our builders were remarking on current design trends {cough, cough, big white boxes} and I told them how I wasn't interested in current trends, nor did I care what others are doing in home design.  Classic never "goes out of style", and what I would love is for a potential new homeowner to walk into our home 30 years from now and say, "this is an amazing home with so much character, and warmth.  It may need to be updated, but it has great bones."

This thought process really helped guide us through the design phase which ended up being fairly lengthy due to the mass of changes we made along the way.  I'm actually glad that we took our time, because we were able to tweak our plans, and add so many minor details that will make a huge difference in the flow of our home.  We're now waiting for our plans to be given the final stamp of approval from the city and are expecting to break ground in the next month or so!

Below is a sample of "inspiration" photos that I've saved and shared with our interior designer over the course of the last year and a half.

I'm excited to share this new journey with you.  Thanks for stopping by! xx
